The project
For Yves V and FR!ES' High Like This, I helped Tim Madden film the confrontation between a dancer and a car. The sequence was designed as a physical duet, with the dancer holding her ground while the vehicle circled, accelerated and threw water across the frame.
The approach
We filmed at night on Sydney Motorsport Park's wet skid pan using a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, Sony a7S II, gimbals and a DJI drone. Most of the interaction was captured practically with the dancer and car performing together. Water on the road created reflections, while spray left on the lens added flare and texture.
What remained
The finished video was released by Spinnin' Records. The shoot was a lesson in coordinating movement, camera position and safety around a fast vehicle while preserving the sense that both performers were challenging one another in the same space.
