The project

Human Hardware arrived suddenly: a message asking for a smoke machine and strobe light, followed by a frenetic day making science fiction on a vintage Bolex. Some projects are carefully cultivated; this one seemed determined to burst into existence.

The approach

I designed and operated lighting while supporting the practical, in-camera effects with smoke, projection, backlight, strobes and wind. The physical limitations of 16mm made every setup more deliberate, while the improvised effects kept the day unpredictable.

What remained

The finished film turns that practical chaos into something tactile and strange: analogue texture, physical effects and an atmosphere that could only have emerged from the room itself.
